Just What is Web Hosting?
The internet has become one of the important things in man’s way to communicate with other people. That is why more and more people and companies have been creating websites so that more people will be knowledgeable about them or their product. Other websites are just plain helpful, they would just want to share information that may benefit other people.
But how are websites able to make to make it visible in the World Wide Web? That is the purpose of web hosting companies. They are able to provide online systems for storing data such as videos, files and music of their customers that can be accessible in the web.
Web hosting can be done on you own home. But there will be too much hassle, especially if you plan on generating lots of hits for your web site. Since it would require for your computer to be turned on all the time and connected to the internet as well. Turning it off makes your website inaccessible.
The services that web hosts provides varies greatly. The most basic of all service is file hosting (web page hosting), where files can be uploaded via a file transfer protocol (FTP) or a web interface.
An FTP works in the same way as an HTTP. It is commonly used to download something from the net or upload something. FTP usually requires the user to login before upload can start, however anonymous access is slowly being popular.
Web page hosting is usually only for personal uses though, as a complex site needs a more comprehensive package for database support.
Another reason why most need web hosts is that running your own server is very complicated task. The last reason is that you office or home’s internet connection may not be adequate enough to host your own site.
That is why most companies or individuals who would want their website to receive more hits outsource the service of web hosting. Among the features usually provided in a paid web hosting is the 24/7 support and personal assistance. (Most likely by those call center people from India). Paid web hosts are also able to load quicker, since each server hosts fewer sites.
For personal use only or enjoyment, you can try Yahoo’s geocities. Although this will only provide you your small site with a few hits. Since Geocities are usually not high on the priority of things when searched on the net.
Regardless of your plan to put your website online, whether in a paid web
hosts or free, don’t forget that you still need to create a website
to upload.
