Humidifiers Guide:

How a Humidifier Works

A humidifier is an appliance that increases the humidity of a room or house. When a house or room is constantly heated by fire or a heater, the air can become unnaturally dry and uncomfortable. Thus a humidifier is used to restore some of the moisture. People who live in hot climates have probably never seen a humidifier as it is used primarily in cold places.

We will look first at how a humidifier works, and then at the basic types of humidifiers.

Humidifier Parts

The humidifier parts are few if it is a basic model. The basic or evaporative humidifier has three parts: fan, filter or wick and reservoir.

The first humidified part is the RESERVOIR containing the water that will be used by the humidifier. It is to be filled before using.

The water is then absorbed into the second humidifier part, the FILTER or WICK where it evaporates. Just like a glass of liquid, the hotter the temperature in the room, the faster the water will evaporate. If the room becomes cold and humid, the water will evaporate more slowly.

The third humidifier part is the FAN which helps to speed up evaporation of the water. From a scientific point of view, blowing air into the water helps the water molecules escape faster from the water’s surface to become water vapor.

Humidifier Type

ULTRASONIC HUMIDIFIER – This type of humidifier is soundless. (The term “ultrasonic” means it emits sounds beyond human hearing.) It releases water as fog into the room. This humidifier is convenient but liable to contamination by germs if poorly maintained.

IMPELLER HUMIDIFIER – With this humidifier, water is flung to a diffuser and broken into tiny droplets and released into the air as a fog. It is dangerous to leave stagnant water in this device.

VAPORIZER or STEAM – This cheap humidifier boils water and releases steam into the air. One can add an inhaler to the water to help relieve nasal congestion. Keep out of reach of children as it can cause burns.

A Vaporizer consumes more power than the previous types of humidifiers. However it would appear safer to use as the Impeller and Ultrasonic types release minerals and micro-organisms into the air together with the water droplets. This is not so with the Vaporizer and Wick models. In Wick humidifiers, the minerals and germs are left on the wick or filter.

Some advanced humidifiers include ultraviolet rays that kill bacteria in stagnant water. Others may include filters. It is recommended that you use water with low mineral content, such as distilled water, for your humidifier.
