The Link Connecting Bandwidth and
Web Hosting
If you’re in the web hosting business, bandwidth is a term that’s sure to be bandied about (pardon the pun) frequently. And even if you’re not but you’re shopping for a web hosting plan, bandwidth is still a term that you should still familiarize yourself with. Bandwidth, in laymen’s terms, is the amount of traffic – or the number of visitors – that’s allowed to view your site. Web hosting sites offer varying bandwidth access for different web hosting plans. To understand bandwidth fully, read on.
NETWORK CONNECTIVITY
Even though you have a fast internet connection at home, it does not necessarily
mean that your website will be provided with equal speed. That alone
depends on the network connectivity of your preferred web hosting company.
If your
website is loaded with graphics and with many other stuff that has to
be downloaded, it may be better for you to choose a web hosting company
with
high network connectivity to improve bandwidth access for your website.
TRAFFIC
This is the most frequent aspect used to explain bandwidth. A good analogy
used to explain this is about telephone lines because it works in a
similar way. If you’re contacting someone, it would be better if the person
owns more lines that one to guarantee easier access. If, however, the person
you’re contacting has only one line, then all of you wanting to contact
him must make use of just one line and wait for a long time till each of
you manages to get through. Bandwidth is counted like how disk space is weighed – through
bytes. If you’re going to download a movie, that is usually 1GB in
weight. If you’ve got 10GB worth of bandwidth, then a tenth of
that is right away compromised.
SO HOW MUCH BANDWIDTH DO YOU REALLY NEED?
It’s a case to case basis. I can say nothing more or less beyond that.
Bandwidth is a deciding factor when it comes to prices of web hosting plans.
Do you need high bandwidth or low? You can try calculating for this manually
or better yet, just avail of the free services online. There’s
a calculator that lets you input the average size of each web page
and expected
average
visitors a day. This will give you the estimated amount of bandwidth
you will need and of course, what type of hosting plan should you purchase.
